Eighth Grade

High school is just around the corner. Now is the time to check your education map and make sure everything is in place for the next part of your journey. Use the following timeline to find out what you should be doing while you are in eighth grade.

Eighth Grade Timeline

  • Tell everyone you know that you want to go to college! Your parents, teachers, counselors, coaches and more are there to help you make it happen.
  • Talk to your friends and family about favorite subjects in school and explore careers in that field.
  • Study hard, especially for the classes that are most difficult for you.
  • Read — fiction, non-fiction and even magazines!
  • Get involved with student leadership programs or other clubs and activities that help build on your natural abilities.
  • Plan the classes you will need to take over the next four years. Take the most challenging courses in English, math, science and social studies that you can handle. Start with the end in mind: what are your long-term goals? What courses will help you prepare?
  • Take classes in art, computers and a world language if you can.
  • Learn as much as you can, get good grades and master key concepts.
  • Ask questions and participate in class.
  • Improve your study habits
  • Take an interest inventory.
  • Think about goals for high school and beyond.
  • If you are able to choose your high school, visit local schools to compare your options.
  • Explore jobs and careers.
  • Talk to family, friends and others about your dreams and plans.
  • Develop good social skills. Plan and prepare for your future.
